Posts from June 2016

The Culinary Academy of Las Vegas (CALV) is back at it again with the 2016 Summer Food Service Program.

Meals will be provided to youth ages 2 to 18 living in low-income areas by CALV and other community partners through a federally funded program administered by Nevada’s Department of Agriculture.

CALV has participated in the Summer Food Service program for 15 years, providing meals to the community during a time of year when food can be scarce in many households. Access to meals during the summer through the Summer Food Program allows youth in the community to avoid the crisis of food insecurity.

Last summer, CALV prepared nearly 44,000 meals and delivered them to 29 sites, and will be providing free and nutritious meals to youth Monday through Friday at CALV. Meals can also be found all over the Las Vegas valley through numerous organizations involved in the Summer Food Service Program, including various churches, libraries, shopping centers, and schools.

Estimados Hermanos y Hermanas,

Fraternalmente,

Geoconda Argüello-Kline

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

The election is just around the corner – June 14, 2016 is Primary Election Day with early voting available from May 28 – June 10.

We’ve enclosed the Culinary Union’s recommendations for the primary election.

We select endorsements with the well-being of Union members and the future of the labor movement in mind.

For our recommendations for Congress, State Legislature, and County Commission, we review the voting records of current elected officials and the opinions and philosophies of new and old candidates.

We all know that politicians will often say anything to get elected, so we review
candidates’ records and look for people who put their words into action.

For our recommendations in the judicial races, we consult with attorneys who represent Union members and the Culinary in court. We rely on first-hand reports of how these candidates have treated Union members in legal cases they have had in Nevada’s court system.

For this primary election, we followed almost all recommendations from the Central Labor Council. All endorsed candidates appeared before an interview panel and answered tough questions about how they’ll fight for union members and their families.

Nevada’s primary elections are “closed” so you can only vote for candidates running in your registered party.

We encourage members of the Culinary and Bartenders Unions to exercise their right to vote (and vote early!) by participating in the upcoming election. Now is our time to let politicians
know we are engaged and active.

If you have questions about our recommended candidates or the election process, please feel free to call the Union’s Political Office: (702) 386-5279.

Fraternally,
Geoconda Argüello-Kline
