We congratulate Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, a champion for working families, on her re-election to the Senate, Congressman Steven Horsford, who has been leading our fight with the IRS, and Representatives Dina Titus and Susie Lee on their re-election to the Congress. We also congratulations to Commissioner Tick Segerblom, a fighter for working families, on his re-election to the Clark County Commission.
Culinary Union is proud to have run the largest political program to get out the vote and defend and deliver Democratic control of the U.S. Senate. Our Union achieved a major milestone: 450 canvassers knocked on over 1 million doors, including more than half of the Black and Latino voters and more than a third of Asian American & Pacific Islander voters.
Thank you, Governor Steve Sisolak! With a big heart and extraordinary leadership, Governor Sisolak led us through one of the most difficult periods in our lifetimes and workers are grateful to have had a Governor who truly cares for workers.
Governor Sisolak stood up against major industries and corporations to protect workers and saved countless lives by signing SB4 Adolfo Fernandez Bill into law and he had our backs and protected our jobs with SB386 Right to Return.
The Culinary Union also commends Governor Sisolak for leading the fight in our state against Wall Street landlords who are taking over our neighborhoods, for committing to Neighborhood Stability and the campaign to win secure and stable neighborhoods, and for being responsible for bringing our economy back stronger than ever.
Under Governor Sisolak’s guidance, Nevada remains on a strong path to recovery that would have never been possible without his determination and perseverance.
Culinary Union has been fighting and winning for working families for 87 years. We remain focused on bringing forward a strong economic agenda that continues to center workers.
STATE OF OUR UNION
IRS UPDATE: We had an in-person meeting with the IRS & the fight continues!
On October 13, 2022, a representative group of Culinary & Bartenders Unions' committee and the Nevada Resort Association were led by Congressman Steven Horsford and met with national IRS leaders here in Las Vegas. The group pushed the IRS to resolve the outstanding issue regarding the current and unfair Tip Allocation Rates. After much back and forth, the IRS was once again not prepared to resolve the issue.
Then the entire Nevada Democratic delegation sent a letter to the US Department of the Treasurer, the Biden/Harris Administration, and the IRS. The letter demands the IRS work with us to reach an agreement:
UNION & COMPANY PROPOSAL TO THE IRS:
- Phase-in effective date to 12/31/23 - first 1/3 rate increase.
- 1/1/2024: Second 1/3 rate increase (relies on a 2-year extension).
- 1/1/2025: Third and final 1/3 rate increase.
- Proposal includes 2-year extension on current agreement
We will keep up the pressure on the IRS to win a resolution!
GRA petition delivery: Guest room attendant committee leaders gathered signatures and delivered a petition to management with the follow message:
We, the housekeeping staff who were loyal and hardworking essential workers during the pandemic who took on extra work every day in order to keep guests safe from the COVID-19 virus, demand that the Company:
1) Keep us safe with working safety buttons, security checks in DD rooms, and more security patrols.
2) Implement daily housekeeping language like in Atlantic City and Hawaii.
3) Give us raises.
We will keep fighting for GRAs!
Upcoming negotiations: The fight for the biggest economic and growth package at Las Vegas Convention Center, Laughlin, Palms, T-Mobile Arena, DBEs at the Airport, Reno Laundry, and Valley Hospital is underway. Talk to your committee leader to get involved.
Valley Hospital negotiations: Valley Hospital workers have not had a contractual raise since the end of 2016. During contract negotiations, the Culinary Union has proposed wages increases as well as new contract provisions regarding sexual harassment and the use of technology in the workplace. The company continues to union bust and continues to propose to gut the Collective Bargaining Agreement by taking away key job protections and to take away Union health care. The fight for a fair union contract is escalating.
PALMS NEGOTIATIONS
Negotiations for a first-time union contract at the Palms Casino Resort continue.
The Culinary Union made proposals in a recent bargaining session that are part of the Las Vegas Strip union standard rights and benefits that the Culinary and Bartenders Unions have secured over 87 years.
Housekeeping, banquets, food and beverage departmental committee meetings have begun. Palms workers will have a strong union contract! YES WE CAN!
SODEXO/CENTERPLATE WORKERS NEED A RAISE
Culinary Union members at Sodexo/Centerplate employed at the Las Vegas Convention Center vote 100% to authorize a strike! Culinary Union is now authorized to call a strike if a contract has not been reached. No strike date has been set as negotiations are on-going.
“I voted to strike because we are the ones that make the Convention Center successful, and we want to get a fair share of that success,”said Dylan Schoenhard, banquet server for Sodexo/Centerplate at Las Vegas Convention Center.
Workers say WE ARE NOT SECOND CLASS WORKERS! They deserve the Las Vegas union standard rights and benefits that the Culinary and Bartenders Unions have fought for and won over 87 years.

“During the Gaming Commission’s August meeting, Ted Pappageorge, Secretary-Treasurer of Culinary, questioned regulators’ ability to oversee Station.
‘Workers are holding Stations accountable, and frankly you need to do the same thing, too,” he said. “If you’re not able to hold Stations accountable, please tell us. If license holders can do what Stations did during the pandemic and is doing now, and you’re not sure what you can do, tell that to the workers. We think working-class people are entitled to some answers.’”

CONGRATULATIONS APEX LINEN WORKERS
Workers at Apex Linen began organizing to form a union in 2015 and quickly the majority of workers signed "UNION YES" cards. The company then started union busting and fired key leaders who supported the union. Culinary Union filed charges with the NLRB and were able to bring back the workers with their benefits paid in full.
Throughout the years, Culinary Union members have held rallies and picket lines outside of Apex Linen in support of workers’ right to unionize.
Apex Linen has been bought by Brady Linen Services and seven years after the union organizing fight began, Apex workers will have a Culinary Union contract!

ESTADO DE NUESTRA UNIÓN
ACTUALIZACIÓN DEL IRS: ¡Tuvimos una reunión en persona con el IRS y la lucha continúa!
El 13 de octubre de 2022, un grupo de representates del comité de La Unión Culinaria, La Unión de Cantineros, y la Asociación de Resort de Nevada fueron liderados por el congresista Steven Horsford y se reunieron con los líderes nacionales del IRS aquí en Las Vegas. El grupo presionó al IRS para que resolviera el problema pendiente con respecto a las actuales e injustas Tasas de Asignación de Propinas. Después de mucho ir y venir, el IRS una vez más no estaba dispuesto a resolver el problema.
Luego, toda la delegación demócrata de Nevada envió una carta al Departamento del Tesoro de EE.UU., la Administración Biden/Harris, y el IRS. La carta exige que el IRS trabaje con nosotros para llegar a un acuerdo:
PROPUESTA DEL SINDICATO Y LA EMPRESA AL IRS:
- Fecha de entrada en vigencia hasta el 31/12/23: primer aumento de tarifa de 1/3.
- 1/1/2024: segundo aumento de tarifa de 1/3 (se basa en una extensión de 2 años).
- 1/1/2025: tercer y último aumento de tarifa de 1/3.
- La propuesta incluye una extensión de 2 años del acuerdo actual
¡Mantendremos la presión sobre el IRS para obtener una resolución!
Entrega de la petición GRA: Los líderes del comité de las recamareras recogieron firmas y entregaron una petición a la gerencia con el siguiente mensaje:
Nosotros, el personal de limpieza, que fuimos trabajadores esenciales leales y trabajadores durante la pandemia, que asumimos trabajo extra cada día para mantener a los huéspedes a salvo del virus COVID-19, exigimos que la Compañía
1) Nos mantenga a salvo con botones de seguridad que funcionen, controles de seguridad en las salas DD y más patrullas de seguridad.
2) Implemente un lenguaje de limpieza diaria como en Atlantic City y Hawaii.
3) Nos suba el sueldo.
Seguiremos luchando por las GRA.
Próximas negociaciones: La lucha por el mayor paquete económico y de crecimiento en el Centro de Convenciones de Las Vegas, Laughlin, Palms, T-Mobile Arena, DBE en el Aeropuerto, Reno Laundry, y Valley Hospital está en marcha. Hable con el líder de su comité para involucrarse.
Negociaciones en el Valley Hospital: Los trabajadores del Valley Hospital no han tenido un aumento contractual desde finales de 2016. Durante las negociaciones del contrato, La Unión Culinaria ha propuesto aumentos salariales, así como nuevas disposiciones contractuales relacionadas con el acoso sexual y el uso de la tecnología en el lugar de trabajo. La empresa sigue reprimiendo sindicatos y continúa proponiendo desmantelar el acuerdo de negociaciones colectiva eliminando protecciones laborales clave y quitando la atención médica del sindicato. La lucha por un contrato sindical justo se está intensificando.
NEGOCIACIONES DEL PALMS
Continúan las negociaciones para un primer contrato sindical en el Palms Casino Resort.
La Unión Culinaria hizo propuestas en una reciente sesión de negociación que forman parte de los derechos y beneficios sindicales estándar del Strip de Las Vegas que los Sindicatos Culinario y de Cantineros han asegurado durante 87 años.
Ya han comenzado las reuniones de los comités de los departamentos de limpieza, banquetes, alimentos y bebidas. ¡Los trabajadores del Palms tendrán un contrato sindical fuerte! ¡SÍ SE PUEDE!
LOS TRABAJADORES DE SODEXO / CENTERPLATE NECESITAN UN AUMENTO
¡Los miembros de La Unión Culinaria de Sodexo/Centerplate empleados en el Centro de Convenciones de Las Vegas votan al 100% para autorizar una huelga! La Unión Culinaria está ahora autorizada a convocar una huelga si no se ha llegado a un contrato. No se ha fijado una fecha para la huelga ya que las negociaciones continúan.
"Voté a favor de la huelga porque somos los que hacemos que el Centro de Convenciones sea exitoso y queremos obtener una parte justa de ese éxito", dijo Dylan Schoenhard, mesero de banquetes de Sodexo/Centerplate en el Centro de Convenciones de Las Vegas.
Los trabajadores dicen: ¡NO SOMOS TRABAJADORES DE SEGUNDA CLASE! Ellos merecen los derechos y beneficios sindicales estándar de Las Vegas por los que han luchado y ganado los sindicatos Culinarios y de Cantineros durante 87 años.

Durante la reunión de agosto de la Comisión de Juegos, Ted Pappageorge, secretario-tesorero de la Unión Culinaria, cuestionó la capacidad de los reguladores para supervisar Station.
“Los trabajadores están responsabilizando a Stations y, francamente, usted también debe hacer lo mismo”, dijo. “Si no puede responsabilizar a Stations, por favor infórmenos. Si los titulares de licencias pueden hacer lo que hizo Stations durante la pandemia y lo que está haciendo ahora, y no está seguro de lo que puede hacer, dígaselo a los trabajadores. Creemos que la gente de clase trabajadora tiene derecho a algunas respuestas”.

FELICIDADES TRABAJADORES DE APEX LINEN
Los trabajadores de Apex Linen comenzaron a organizarse para formar un sindicato en 2015 y rápidamente la mayoría de los trabajadores firmaron tarjetas de "UNIÓN SÍ". La empresa empezó entonces a reprimir al sindicato y despidió a líderes clave que apoyaban al sindicato. La Unión Culinaria presentó cargos ante la NLRB y logró que los trabajadores volvieran a trabajar con sus beneficios pagados en su totalidad.
A lo largo de los años, los miembros de la Unión Culinaria han realizado concentraciones y líneas de protesta frente a Apex Linen en apoyo al derecho de los trabajadores a sindicalizarse.
