On September 14th, 2020 the 9th Circuit Appeals Court issued an opinion in favor of the Trump Administration’s plan to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for certain countries (including: Haiti, Nicaragua, Sudan, and El Salvador).
What does this mean?
The fight is not over. The case would now have to be reviewed by the full 9th Circuit Court en banc which could take up to a year before they make a final decision.
Important to know:
If you are a TPS beneficiary, your work authorization is still valid until January 4th, 2021. If you have issues with your company regarding work authorization, contact your union organizer.
Our international union, UNITE HERE, will be tracking announcements by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) about extension of work authorizations related to TPS. We will let you know any updates.
As the largest organization of immigrants in Nevada, the Culinary Union is committed to win comprehensive immigration reform and a pathway to citizenship for all immigrants including the 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States. This general election is so important to our families. TPS holders should have a pathway to citizenship – the next U.S. President and Senate needs to pass a law to permanently protect TPS holders who are here to stay.
