...The Democratic presidential nominee made a visit to the headquarters of Culinary Union Local 226 and Bartenders Union Local 165, taking photos with members and speaking about her proposals, including to tackle housing costs and price gouging.

It was also an opportunity for her to remind the powerful union of their shared interests in continuing their work this fall to elect her to the White House.

Culinary, which represents about 60,000 hospitality workers in Nevada, predominantly on the Las Vegas Strip, is considered the state’s most influential coalition. From going door-to-door on behalf of political candidates endorsed by the union to registering voters and getting them to the polls, the union’s support has been critical in Nevada’s overwhelming support of Democrats.

The overlap between Harris and the Culinary Union goes further than labor policy.

Harris’ housing plan includes $25,000 in down payment assistance for first-time homebuyers. That’s similar to what the union has done for its members through the Culinary and Bartenders housing partnership, which provides eligible members with down payment assistance of up to $20,000 to purchase their first home.

For years, the Culinary has also pushed for rent control in Nevada, working to place the issue on the 2022 ballot in North Las Vegas. The union then supported a rent cap throughout the state in 2023. Both attempts failed.

While less discussed this past month, Harris said in an early campaign speech that she would ban hidden fees and cap “unfair rent increases.” Biden had also endorsed a 5% cap before Harris replaced him in the race.
