"I feel happy that we were able to get a contract at Palms for my coworkers and I after we voted to unionize 5 years ago," said Lydia Martin, a banquet food server at Palms for 21 years. "As a day 1 employee, I am getting older, and I have already invested 21 years into this company, so being able to win great health insurance and job security until I'm ready to retire is a relief. I am glad that the Culinary Union got the Right to Return law passed to grant us recall rights after the pandemic and that the company did the right thing for us workers. I'm so happy that we now have a contract and the protection it brings.”

Excerpt from the Review-Journal: Culinary walkout at Las Vegas hospital delayed. [May 08, 2023]
 
A planned strike by back-of-the-house workers at Valley Hospital Medical Center set for Tuesday was delayed at the last hour after the employer made “significant proposals” in the union contract negotiations, according to Culinary Local 226.

“In order to continue progress, the Culinary Union negotiating committee voted today to extend the strike by 10 days,” the Culinary wrote in a statement Monday night. “The Culinary Union urges Valley Hospital to do the right thing and settle a fair contract that protects worker’s health care and pension, and provides significant raises to deal with inflation and the rising cost of living.”

A 24/7 strike — the first by Culinary members in two decades — will include daily 12-hour pickets at the hospital at 620 Shadow Lane. It will continue until “this company figures out how to reverse seven years of union busting,” Pappageorge said.

The strike delay, an apparent breakthrough, was achieved during a new round of negotiations Monday, “but it’s not enough,” [Pappageorge] said. The new strike deadline is set for May 19."

🗳️ NEW YORK TIMES- Say Goodbye to Daily Hotel Room Cleaning
In recognition of the unions’ political power, dozens of cities including Atlanta, Boston, Denver, Honolulu, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami and New York have passed agreements or legislation requiring hotels to offer daily housekeeping as the norm. And even these rules aren’t always honored: In January 2022, guest room attendants who belong to the Culinary Workers Union rallied in Las Vegas after reports that daily cleaning protocols weren’t being followed.

Elena Newman, who has been a guest room attendant in Las Vegas for 19 years, said hotel managers may believe they’re saving money by cutting down on cleaning, but it’s not the case.
 
When rooms aren’t cleaned daily, the work becomes more time-consuming, Ms. Newman said, explaining that while her hotel does honor the daily cleaning rule, guests sometimes pop the “Do Not Disturb” sign on their doors.
 
“There is soap scum buildup in the bathroom, lots of trash in the room, and it takes a lot longer to clean and vacuum the rooms,” she said. “It gives me a lot of stress because I get behind on my work.”

The Culinary Union has come out in support of the measure as well, arguing that it would expand access to mental health services. Several self-identified union members spoke during public comment about the need for a lottery and the resources it could fund.

The development comes a day after the Culinary Union released a statement criticizing the A's for not yet agreeing to a so-called card check neutrality agreement, meaning the front office has not agreed to be neutral in the event stadium workers choose to unionize.
 
Culinary in its statement had called on the potential stadium to be built "by local building trade unions" as well.
 
"That is concerning, especially since every baseball player on the Oakland Athletics' roster is protected by a union contract," Ted Pappageorge said in a news release. "Hospitality workers serving customers and players at any future stadium should also be protected and have a choice on whether to be union.

Negotiating teams from the Culinary union and Sodexo Live!, the contracted food service provider for the Las Vegas Convention Center, averted a strike Friday night — six hours before workers vowed to walk off their jobs and form picket lines.
 
Representatives of Culinary Local 226 and Bartenders Local 165 announced Friday evening that they’d establish picket lines at various locations around the Convention Center and walk off the job Saturday at 6 a.m.

Los equipos de negociación de la Unión culinaria y Sodexo Live!, el proveedor de servicios de alimentos contratado para el Centro de Convenciones de Las Vegas, evitaron una huelga el viernes por la noche, seis horas antes de que los trabajadores prometieran abandonar sus trabajos y formar líneas de protesta.
 
Representantes de Local 226 de la Culinaria y Local 165 de Cantineros anunciaron el viernes por la tarde que establecerían líneas de protesta en varios lugares alrededor del Centro de Convenciones y abandonarían el trabajo el sábado a las 6 a.m.
 
Pero alrededor de las 11:55 p.m. El viernes, los funcionarios sindicales anunciaron que se había llegado a un acuerdo sobre un contrato de cuatro años.
