The Culinary Union and many of its affiliates will be operating for limited hours during Thanksgiving week. Here is a list of all office hours in one place:

✊ Culinary Union: Closed at 1 pm on Wednesday, November 27, closed all day Thursday, November 28 and Friday, November 29.

💪 Bartenders Union: Closed Thursday, November 28 and Friday, November 29. Also closed December 25th, 26th, and 27th for Christmas.

⚕️ Culinary Health Fund: Closed Thursday, November 28 and Friday, November 29.

Meet Celia, Culinary Union member for 12 years!

The Culinary Union has fought for 84 years to make sure workers in Nevada have a good standard of living and a union job with fair wages, job security, great health benefits, and a pension to retire with dignity and respect.

We like to share member profiles and today's highlight is Celia, a guest room attendant at MGM Grand and Culinary Union member since 2007.

“In 2016, my organizer, Ana, asked me to do a political leave-of-absence (LOA). I immediately said yes because I love my union. I loved my LOA experience. When I talked to people in my community, I was able to talk to them about the importance of voting and the importance of choosing the right candidates. It’s important to me to choose candidates who care about immigration, protecting my union, and my healthcare.

It’s important to me that presidential candidates support my union and my union healthcare. My healthcare is very important to me - as a single mother, I need to save money where I can. When I don’t feel good, I can go to the doctor without thinking about whether I can afford it. When I was going through menopause, I had a lot of complications. I was bleeding excessively and sometimes I would have to miss work for three or four days. During that time I didn’t have to worry about medical bills because I have great health insurance.

Being a Culinary Union member changed my life for the better. With my union job, I will have a dignified retirement. Social Security will only be about $800 a month when I retire, and I feel better knowing that I will have a guaranteed union pension check to add to that.”

La Unión Culinaria ha peleado durante 84 años para asegurarse de que los trabajadores en Nevada tengan un buen estándar de vida y un empleo sindicalizado con sueldos justos, seguridad laboral, excelentes beneficios médicos, y una pensión para jubilarse con dignidad y respeto.

“En el 2016, mi organizadora, Ana, me pidió que tomara un permiso de ausencia político (LOA). De inmediato dije que sí ya que amo a mi sindicato. Me encantó mi experiencia de LOA. Al hablar con las personas en mi comunidad, pude contarles de la importancia de votar y la importancia de elegir a los candidatos adecuados. Para mi es importante escoger candidatos a los que les importa la inmigración, proteger a mi sindicato, y mi atención médica.

Es importante para mí que los candidatos presidenciales apoyen a mi unión y el seguro médico de mi unión. Mi seguro de salud es muy importante para mí – como madre soltera, necesito ahorrar dinero por donde pueda. Cuando no me siento bien, puedo ir al doctor sin pensar si lo puedo pagar. Cuando estaba pasando por la menopausia, tuve muchas complicaciones. Sangraba excesivamente y a veces tenía que faltar al trabajo tres o cuatro días. Durante ese tiempo no me tuve que preocupar por los cobros médicos ya que tengo un excelente seguro médico.

Ser miembro de la Unión Culinaria cambió mi vida para mejor. Con mi trabajo sindicalizado, tengo una jubilación digna. El seguro social me dará solamente como $800 por mes cuando me jubile, y me siento mejor sabiendo que podré sumarle a eso un cheque garantizado de la pensión de la unión.”

2020 Democrats support Station Casinos workers

Over 6,000 casino workers in Las Vegas have been fighting to win a better future for themselves and their families for almost a decade. These workers are cooks, kitchen workers, food servers, bartenders, cocktail servers, housekeepers, and other service workers who make their company, Station Casinos, successful.

Last year the company generated $1.5 billion in revenue in Las Vegas alone. Station Casinos workers, however, make less than workers doing the same jobs at unionized casinos on the Las Vegas Strip and do not get the same affordable family healthcare and retirement benefits like at those union casinos. In the absence of a union contract, they also do not have any job security, fair scheduling, fair seniority rules, or a fair grievance process.

These workers are rising up and organizing because they want to be treated fairly and paid fairly. They do not want to be second-class workers in their own city anymore. Their fight for economic justice is a crucial struggle for these times, as this group of largely immigrant workers are rising up against two billionaire owners, Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta, who are major supporters of the Trump agenda.

Workers at 7 Station Casinos’ Las Vegas properties have voted to unionize and they are fighting for a contract: Boulder Station (September 2016), Palace Station (March 2017), Green Valley Ranch (November 2017), Palms (April 2018), Sunset Station (June 2019), Fiesta Rancho (June 2019), and Fiesta Henderson (September 2019).

In early 2019, Democratic candidates for President began to take notice and they have supported Station Casinos workers on social media, often uplifting the workers’ fight to local and international media attention.

CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS UPDATE

Congratulations to workers at the Cosmopolitan on ratifying their contract! Workers will now have a great Culinary and Bartenders Union contract with wage increases, health insurance, and job security including new protections for sexual harassment, technology and automation, and immigration!

Negotiations continue at at Valley Hospital, Hilton Grand Vacations, Airline workers, and Circus Circus Reno.

ACTUALIZACIÓN DE LA NEGOCIACIÓN DE LOS CONTRATOS

¡Felicitaciones a los trabajadores del Cosmopolitan por ratifi car su contrato! Ahora los trabajadores tendrán un excelente contrato sindical de la Culinaria y los Cantineros con aumentos salariales, seguro médico, y seguridad laboral que incluye nuevas protecciones contra el acoso sexual, la tecnología y automatización, ¡e inmigración!

Las negociaciones continúan en Valley Hospital, Hilton Grand Vacations, para los trabajadores de las aerolíneas, y en el Circus Circus de Reno.

HOMEBUYERS WORKSHOP

Hundreds of workers and their families attended a 4-day Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America (NACA) event in partnership with Culinary and Bartenders Unions at the Luxor. During the workshop, union members received homebuying counseling with many being pre-approved the same day for NACA’s Best in America mortgage! Members were also eligible for up to $20,000 in free down payment assistance from the Culinary and Bartenders Housing Fund to permanently reduce their mortgage interest rate to low fixed rates - sometimes less than 1%! Congratulations to all those who went through the process. Next step: Buying your dream home!

TALLER PARA COMPRADORES DE CASA

Cientos de trabajadores acompañados por sus familias asistieron a un evento de 4 días realizado en el Luxor por Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America (NACA) en asociación con la Unión Culinaria y la Unión de Cantineros. Durante el taller, los trabajadores agremiados recibieron asesoría para la compra de una casa ¡y muchos fueron pre aprobados el mismo día para la Mejor Hipoteca en América de NACA! Los miembros de los sindicatos también podían recibir hasta $20,000 para su pago inicial del Fondo de Viviendas de la Culinaria y los Cantineros para bajar permanentemente el interés de su préstamo hipotecario - ¡a veces menos de 1%! HOUSING SUCCESS STORY

Norberto, a cook at Bally’s, and his husband Antonio with the help of the Culinary and Bartenders Housing Fund and NACA were able to buy a home. They were approved with NACA for an initial interest rate of 4%. With the help of the housing fund they were able to buy down their interest rate to 2.75%! Their new home is a 2-story modern style with 3 bedrooms, 2½ baths, a 2 car garage and a swimming pool. Congratulations to Norberto and Antonio on their first home!

HISTORIA DE EXITO EN VIVIENDAS

Norberto, que es un cocinero en el Bally’s, y su esposo Antonio pudieron comprar una casa con la ayuda de NACA y del Fondo de Viviendas de la Culinaria y los Cantineros. GRIEVANCE VICTORIES

The Culinary Union’s grievance team fights and wins tough battles. They work hard to win back lost wages and jobs back for members. Did you know? This year the grievance team has already won over $1 million in backpay, lost wages, and settlements for members!

If you have an issue at work and want to file a grievance, please stop by the Culinary Union Monday (8am-3pm) and Tuesday-Friday (8am-4pm) to file a grievance. Don’t forget to bring any paperwork, documentation, or evidence for your case.

The Culinary Union is proud to have marched in the Las Vegas PRIDE Parade! 2019 marks the 84th anniversary of an organization that has improved the lives of hundreds of thousands of Nevada hospitality workers and their families with union wages and benefits including healthcare. The Culinary Health Fund was founded in the 1960s and covers medications & counseling services associated with HIV/AIDS. The Culinary Health Fund also offers coverage for gender confirmation hormone therapy, surgery, & counseling services for individuals seeking to transition.
