After settling union contracts for over 40,000 hospitality workers, the Culinary Union celebrates a historic victory by securing the best contract EVER won with MGM Resorts, Caesars Entertainment, and Wynn Resorts.
We aren't done fighting for workers as there are 24 more contracts to go! As the fight continues for 15,000 Strip Independent and Downtown workers, we wanted to share some news that feature the Culinary Union and members pushing to ensure that ONE JOB SHOULD BE ENOUGH.
Hospitality workers in Culinary Local 226 have reached a tentative contract agreement at nine Las Vegas properties operated by Caesars Entertainment, union officials said on Wednesday, averting a strike of the company’s roughly 10,000 union members...
The union, a local affiliate of Unite Here, and Caesars reached a tentative agreement on the five-year contract after 20 hours of negotiations, the union said, and before the strike deadline of 5 a.m. Friday...

Less than 24 hours before a strike deadline, Culinary Workers Local 226 reached a tentative contract agreement with MGM Resorts International, the union announced Thursday morning.
“Daily room cleaning was the most difficult issue out of all these negotiations,” Pappageorge said. “It was exacerbated because we had state legislation requiring daily room cleanings but some of these state politicians turned their backs on these workers.”
Daily room cleanings were implemented as a safety protocol during the pandemic but the requirement was rescinded during the recent legislative session with the support of legislative Democratic leadership.
“It makes the victory more powerful and striking,” [Pappageorge] said.
Christine Cook, a uniform control attendant at Wynn, said in a statement provided by the union that her favorite parts of the new contract are “the wage increases and the retroactive pay because it will help my family and I have a better future and achieve our dreams.”
President Joe Biden sent his congratulations to the union, saying hospitality workers should always be able to provide for their families.
“These workers understand better than just about anybody that a job is about more than just a paycheck.,” Biden said in a statement. “It’s about dignity. It’s about respect. Most importantly, it’s about being able to look your kid in the eye and say, ‘Honey, it’s going to be okay.’”
Rory Kuykendall, a bellman at Flamingo Las Vegas, said in September after voting to authorize a strike that he wanted stronger job protection against the inevitable advancements in technology to be written into their new union contract.
“We want to make sure that we, as the workers, have a voice and a say in any new technology that is introduced at these casinos,” he said.

If those workers were to head on strike on Friday, that would be the largest hospitality strike in us history.
...[O]ne thing the union has been talking about for many weeks now is that one job should be enough signaling that a lot of the negotiations and a lot of these deals that are trying to be worked out center around wages, making sure that these folks who work at these hotels and casinos can support their families on one job...
Debra Jefferies, a cocktail waitress at the Horseshoe Las Vegas, spent much of the week wondering whether she would be walking a picket line, as she did in 1984 — the last time there was a major strike among hospitality workers in the city.
“There was solidarity back then, just like there has been right now,” said Ms. Jefferies, 68. “Each generation has stepped up to demand better working conditions.”
Nearly 35,000 union members, including Ms. Jefferies, had threatened to begin a strike on Friday against the city’s three big casino operators after months of negotiations had failed to yield a new five-year labor agreement.

In a statement on Friday, President Biden applauded the Culinary Union, saying, “Las Vegas has a long union history and workers have been critical to the city’s growth and success.”
Yusett Salomon was among the workers who knocked on doors for Democrats during the 2022 election. He has worked as a warehouse operator transporting pallets of food and plants at the Wynn for the past two years, earning $22 an hour.
On Thursday, Mr. Salomon sat inside a cavernous hotel conference room observing negotiations. “There is no better time than now to fight for what we deserve,” he said.
