Workers at Fiesta Henderson made their voices be heard and voted to unionize Friday, September 13th! 57% voted UNION YES!

“I voted YES to unionize because I want to have better health insurance, job security, and a pension,” said Matthew Seevers, a bartender at Fiesta Henderson. “I have a family and I want to make sure that they are taken care of. I feel proud because with the union, we will finally have a voice, and finally have someone in our corner to fight for what is right.”

The Culinary and Bartenders Unions will represent over 300 Fiesta Henderson workers! Welcome to the family, Fiesta Henderson!

Fiesta Henderson is the seventh Station Casinos property to unionize since 2016 in Las Vegas. Fiesta Henderson will be joining Boulder Station, Palace Station, Green Valley Ranch, Palms, Sunset Station, and Fiesta Rancho at the negotiating table.

CONTRACT NEGOTIATION UPDATES

NEGOTIATIONS CONTINUE for Hilton Grand Vacations and The Cosmopolitan. Vdara and Signature have ratified their contracts! Hard Rock workers will get Culinary Health insurance for the first time on September 1, 2019. The union busters at Valley Hospital are not agreeing to our great Culinary Health insurance and Circus Circus Reno management continues to treat workers as second-class, so the fight continues. Workers will fight until we win!

Since August 1, 2019, 4,000 workers from Caesars Entertainment and MGM Resorts came down to the union for departmental meetings. The focus is on enforcing our union contracts for workloads, respect, set work stations, realignment, and cuts. If you notice that the company is increasing your work load contact your shop steward or union organizer.

Step 1 trainings are completed at Rio and Caesars Palace. Flamingo’s trainings are ongoing. Another round of Step 1 trainings is scheduled for Harrah’s (September) and Ballys, Paris, and Planet Hollywood (October).

APALA CONVENTION

The Culinary Union is the largest Asian American Pacific Islander organization in Nevada. Did you know? Our union represents over 9,000 AAPI workers! Several Culinary Union AAPI shop stewards and volunteer organizers attended the AFL-CIO Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance’s (APALA) 15th Biennial Convention in Las Vegas. There is a long tradition of AAPI workers standing together and fighting for justice. Onwards!

La Unión Culinaria es la organización en Nevada más grande de Asiático-Americanos de las Islas del Pacífico (AAPI por sus siglas en inglés). ¿Usted sabía eso? ¡Nuestro sindicato representa a más de 9,000 trabajadores AAPI! Varios shop stewards y organizadores voluntarios AAPI asistieron a la 15ª Convención Bienal de la Alianza Laboral de Asiático-Americanos del Pacífico de AFL-CIO (APALA) en Las Vegas. Los trabajadores AAPI tienen una larga tradición de mantenerse unidos y pelear por la justicia. ¡Hacia adelante!

Workers at 6 Station Casinos properties (Boulder, Palace, Green Valley Ranch, Palms, Fiesta Rancho, & Sunset) have voted to unionize and are fighting for a contract.

LÍNEA DE PROTESTA DEL PALMS

Cientos de miembros de la 15ª Convención Bienal de la Alianza Laboral de Asiático-Americanos del Pacífico de AFL-CIO (APALA) acompañaron a la Unión Culinaria y los trabajadores del Palms en su línea de protesta. NEVADA STATE AFL-CIO SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Children of Culinary Union members: Cinnamon, Arianna, and Gabriel won a $2,000 scholarship each from the Nevada State AFL-CIO Arnold/Jones/Evans Scholarship Fund. Culinary Union president Ted Pappageorge was at the breakfast to award the scholarship. Congratulations, students!

Want to learn a new skill? You might qualify for free training or a scholarship! With your union benefits, you can take classes at the Culinary Academy of Las Vegas (CALV). CALV was founded in 1993. It is a nationally recognized model of labor and management working together. It is a partnership between the Culinary and Bartenders Unions and 29 properties on the Las Vegas Strip. Over 42,000 workers just like you have gone through the training program which helps workers enter the hospitality industry.

You are able to complete training and classes for 12 different positions. The scheduling is flexible so you can advance your career while working your union job.

Here are some of the positions you can get training for:

Entry-level:
Bar porter, bus person, fountain worker, guest room attendant, house person, utility porter, and steward

Six months of relevant experience required:
Baker’s helper, bar apprentice, food server, professional cook, sommelier, and wine server
